2010 Cosmetology Seminar Featuring "Scruples International" - Aug. 2nd
Area cosmetologists can take advantage of an exciting learning opportunity by attending Shawnee Community College's Annual Hair Seminar on Monday, August 2, on the main campus near Ullin.
The annual event will feature Scruples International and will offer artistic cutting, dramatic coloring and creative styling demonstrations.

Auditions Set for 22nd Annual Fall Musical at SCC,
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" Sept. 3rd-4th

Auditions for the 22nd Annual Fall Musical at Shawnee Community College will be on Friday and Saturday, September 3rd and 4th. Friday's auditions will be from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday's auditions will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by noon.
Auditions will be taken on a first come, first serve basis, and will last about 15 minutes.

Educational Financial Aid Assistance Available at SCC
The mission of the Shawnee Community College Financial Aid office is to provide education and information, guidance, and support for students and families interested in the financial aid process.
The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, commonly known as the FAFSA. By completing this form, students are automatically applying for a Pell Grant, FSEOG, and MAP for Illinois residents. More...

Curt Jones Shares His Story with Area Youth
During a visit to Shawnee Community College, Curt Jones, inventor and, most famously, the creator of Dippin Dots spoke to area high school students about his entrepreneur experiences, noting his early failures that led to the successful enterprise for which he is famous. Jones listened intently to the students' business plan ideas, offering tips for improvement, and perhaps more importantly, inspiring them to move forward with their business ideas. More...

American Commercial Lines and Local Businesses Promote Entrepreneurship
Students from throughout the district attended the Elite Youth Entrepreneurship Camp this week at Shawnee Community College. The week-long camp offered career assessment, business planning, web and logo design information, and financial management ideas in their quest to explore entrepreneurship. More...

Massage Therapy Opportunities at SCC
For the past year, students from Kentucky and Missouri have joined Illinois classmates at Shawnee Community College for Massage Therapy program classes. SCC has graduated over 75 students since the program began in 2001. Shawnee Community College's Massage Therapy one-year certificate program is an intense program designed to introduce the student to the history, current trends, basic theories and techniques of massage. SCC President Larry Peterson congratulates Guy Renzaglia, founder of Alto Vineyards, and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award. Renzaglia was honored at the "Salute to Southernmost Illinois Tourism" luncheon held at Shawnee Community College on July 15th.

New Student Trustee Credits Success to Beta Club
Shannon Knowles of Ullin has joined the elite group of Shawnee Community College students who have had the honor of serving on the SCC Board of Trustees. Knowles is a life-long resident of the Southern Illinois region and graduated from Century High School in Ullin, where she was a member of the Beta Club, Science Club, Student Council, Year Book Club, and Career Prep. SCC Cosmetology 100% Pass Rate
Skilled hair stylists are in great demand, with unlimited opportunities throughout our region and beyond. Boasting a 100% state board examination pass rate, the Shawnee Community College cosmetology program prepares students in a hands-on, true-to-life salon environment.
Combined with class lectures, students obtain the basic knowledge and skills compatible with the Illinois Department and Education guidelines for training license cosmetologists. Students can choose from one-year cosmetology certification, a two-year associate of applied science in cosmetology technology degree, or advance to the cosmetology instructor training certificate program. Governor Quinn Pledges Support to District
Governor Pat Quinn today signed a bill into law to create the Alexander-Cairo Port District. The bill is effective immediately and was sponsored by Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) and Representative Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg). The law creates the Alexander-Cairo Port District and gives the board the authority to oversee, operate, and maintain port-related facilities and export trade companies within the boundaries of the district.
Pledging his support to the residents of Alexander County, thanked the citizens for their dedication to the area and recognized leaders in the community, including SCC President Dr. Larry Peterson. He went on to say, "I Believe in Community Colleges." The Shawnee Community College district is also home to the Massac-Metropolis Port District, which Governor Quinn signed into law last year.

Substance Abuse Counselor Training Available at SCC
Shawnee Community College is the only community college in Southern Illinois accredited by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association, Inc. (IAODAPCA). The Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse certificate and degree programs offered by SCC provide counselor training that an individual needs to successfully complete the Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC) certification examination offered by IAODAPCA. Pope County's Butler Signs with Saints
Recent Pope County graduate Jake Butler has signed a letter of intent to join the Shawnee Community College Saints for the 2010-11 baseball season. Although Butler is attending on a SCC baseball scholarship, he will have more than the sport on his mind. He plans to seek an associate of engineering science degree. More...

TJ Simmons Signs Letter of Intent with Shawnee
TJ Simmons has received a full scholarship to play baseball for Shawnee Community College in Illinois, signing a letter of intent to join the Saints' baseball team for the upcoming 2010-11 season. Shawnee's baseball coach Greg Sheppard welcomed Breckinridge County High School left handed pitcher and centerfielder along with his parents, Timmy and Valeria Simmons of Hardinsburg, Kentucky, to the main campus. SCC Foundation Golf Tournament a Huge Success
Twenty-seven teams joined the Shawnee Community College Foundation at the Gambit Golf Course in Vienna on June 11th, for the Annual Foundation Golf scholarship fundraiser. Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for traditional and non-traditional students from throughout our district.
